security and encryption
Recently there as been a flood of reported data loss by some of the big organisations where they have lost personal information about the general public. One of the more memorable has been the massive data loss by HM Customs and Revenue back in November ’07 where they lost bank details of 25 million people. This data was held on 2 computer disks in an unencrypted format, which in layman’s terms means that a password was not required to read it. Some 2 years on from this event high profile companies are still loosing our personal information, East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust in September ’10, despite the heightened awareness of the problem.
In April ’10 the Data Protection Act (DPA) was changed to increase the fine for data loss from £50,000 to £500,000.
No small business can afford fines such as these in the event of data loss but more importantly they cannot afford the loss of reputation that will result from this type of event. However, it is preventable.
